Panaji: At the backdrop of social activist alleging that there is a political mastermind behind attack on their colleague Rama Kankonkar, Goa police on Monday said that the victim in his statement has not named any politician.
Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta told reporters that the statement of Kankonkar was recorded on October 2 by Panaji police at Goa Medical College and Hospital where he is currently admitted.
Gupta said that the victim has named one accused while he has described two other accused who were involved in the attack. When asked whether the victim has named any politician, the SP replied in negative adding “the investigation is still going in the case.”
Kankonkar, a social activist was assaulted by a group of men at Caranzalem near Panaji on September 17 in a broad daylight. Various social activists have been alleging that he was assaulted as per the directions of a political mastermind.
Addressing media persons on Monday, the SP said that there has been multiple reports about the statement of the victim in the investigation of the case.
“Victim’s statement holds a lot of importance for investigation. It gives first hand description of the accused involved and sequence of events that unfolded during the offence,” he said.
Gupta said that by corroborating the statement with other available evidences, we can present a strong case in the court against those involved.
“The statement of victim in this case was recorded on October 02, 2025 evening at ward no.121, GMC Bambolim. In the statement victim has narrated details about how a group of individuals had assaulted him near Kamakshi Hotel in Caranzalem,” he said.
Gupta said that the victim has also mentioned that during the assault he had identified one of the accused involved named Minguel.
“He has further narrated that twice in past Minguel has tried to assault him. He has narrated those two incidents too in his statement. He remembers the description two more individuals and has said that he can identify the attackers,” he said.
When asked whether any politician was named, the SP said “Apart from this he has not named anyone else in his statement. Further investigation is in progress.”
Police have arrested seven people in connection with the assault, who are currently in the Central Jail at Colvale.
