The National Students Union of India (NSUI) Goa strongly believes that appointment of Harilal Menon as the Goa University’s Vice Chancellor will be a major boost to revive the varsity’s declining reputation.
A delegation led by NSUI Goa President Naushad Chowdhari met Menon on Thursday to congratulate him on his appointment. The Union, while urging the new VC to improve the standard of the State’s lone university, has also pleaded to appoint a full-time Registrar.
“We met Dr Menon to congratulate him on being appointed as GU’s VC. He is the right choice for this post. He is the first full time academic from within the university to be its VC and having vast knowledge since his appointment as Professor in 1988, we are certain he will run the administration smoothly,” Naushad said at a press conference held in the office of Congress in the capital city.
The NSUI which has been actively raising student-related issues slammed the unproductive reign of the immediate past Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni. Naushad pointed to GU’s embarrassing drop in national ranking during Sahni’s tenure.
“GU slipped 15 spots in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of 100 best universities in India to the 96th spot. GU’s ranking in 2016, which is when Sahni was appointed to the post of VC, was 20. It dropped to 68 in the year 2018, 81 in 2019, 93 in 2020 and 96 this year. In a period of five years, GU’s ranking has dropped significantly under Sahni’s tenure,” Naushad said, adding that NSUI has urged the present VC to revive the standards of the university.
The GU is also expected to get a full time Registrar by September-end or latest by October first week, he added. “We have requested the VC to appoint a full time Registrar as it’s been exactly one year today that Prof Y V Reddy resigned from the post. Since then we have a part time Registrar due to which the entire administration has collapsed. Dr Menon has assured to do the needful,” he said.
