Panaji: MP Captain Viriato Fernandes has voiced strong opposition to the recent government ban on the popular community game of Housie, expressing both shock and confusion over the decision.

Reacting to the move, Viriato emphasized that Housie has long been a treasured part of Goan cultural life, especially during local festivals, football tournaments, and religious feasts.

“We’ve always played Housie during our local festivals—it’s something that brings people together,” he said. “There’s excitement, laughter, and a sense of community as players wait anxiously for their numbers to be called, hoping to win a prize.”

Viriato questioned the reasoning behind labeling Housie as a “social evil,” pointing out the contradiction in allowing the casino industry to thrive in Goa while banning a humble community game.

“If the government sees Housie as a problem, how can they ignore the magnitude of what’s happening in the casinos?” he asked.
