Panaji: Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday welcomed the decision of Goa government to form Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into illegal land grabbing and the transfers.

“If you look at it, it’s a big scam. I don’t know what magnitude it is,” Rane told reporters responding to a question on forming the SIT headed by Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) to investigate land grabbing and the transfer cases.

He said that it is a welcome step that the State government has formed SIT to investigate into all these illegalities. Rane said that the SIT would help investigation into the illegalities to be taken to its logical end.

The minister said that people who are involved in such illegalities needs to be prosecuted.

Goa Chief Minister on Thursday had said that even government lands have been sold off or acquired fraudulently by land mafia in the state.

Police have received many complaints of fraudulent sales of land and even government lands have been grabbed in this way, Sawant had told reporters.

The Archaeology department and Registration department have also lodged complaints of fraudulent land transactions, he had added.

The problem of land grabbing and illegal transfers is acute in the coastal area where the demand for real estate is very high, the CM had noted.
