Panaji: Amidst continuing rains in the coastal state, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that the state government has sought the financial assistance from center to rehabilitate the flood affected areas and the people in the state.

The areas of Pernem, Bicholim and Thivim were inundated forcing evacuation of more than 150 families in the state, while several houses had collapsed and roads washed away due to rains during last week. Though the rains have continued this week, the flood situation has subsided.

Sawant told  reporters at the sidelines of state level Independence Day function that both the district collectors have been asked to submit detailed report on the loss caused due to the floods by August 20.

“We will be able to ascertain the loss only after receiving reports from both the district collectors. Right now, we don’t even have the rough estimates,” he said.

The chief minister stated that the state government has sought financial assistance from the centre to rehabilitated flood affected villages and the people. “State will also pitch in with the funds but we have also sought assistance from the centre. The actual amount that we expect from the centre will be known only after receiving the reports,” he said.

Sawant said that the locals have also been appealed to contribute financial for the work of flood relief by donating for chief minister’s relief fund. He said that the flood situation in these areas has eased but the restoration work can be taken up after the rain takes a break.
