Panaji: Goa recorded a 31.7% deficiency in rainfall during the 2026 Southwest Monsoon, with the state receiving nearly 952 mm less rainfall than normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The state received an area-weighted average rainfall of 2,055.4 mm between June 1 and September 30, against the normal rainfall of 3,007.8 mm, resulting in a seasonal deficit of 31.7%, the IMD’s Meteorological Centre, Goa, said in a report issued on Wednesday.
Rainfall remained below normal in all four months of the monsoon season, with June recording a deficit of 34.6%, July 33.4%, August 20%, and September 44%. September witnessed the highest monthly rainfall deficiency during the season.
The 2026 monsoon also recorded the largest negative seasonal rainfall departure in Goa during the 1980–2026 period, according to IMD data. The previous major deficits were recorded in 2006 (-29%), 1986 (-23%), 2015 (-21%), and 2018 (-19%).
The rainfall deficit was more pronounced in North Goa, which recorded 1,950.9 mm against its normal of 3,085.5 mm, a deficiency of 36.8%.
South Goa received 2,147.7 mm against the normal 2,939.2 mm, registering a deficit of 26.9%.
There was considerable variation in rainfall across the state. Valpoi recorded the highest seasonal rainfall among the rain-gauge stations considered, at 2,836.7 mm, followed by Dharbandora with 2,806.8 mm and Sanguem with 2,634.8 mm.
Panaji recorded the lowest seasonal rainfall at 1,385 mm, followed by Mormugao (1,527.1 mm), Dabolim (1,575.1 mm), and Mapusa (1,582.2 mm).
The IMD said the 2026 Southwest Monsoon over Goa was marked by persistent rainfall deficiency across all four monsoon months and considerable spatial variation in rainfall across the state.
