Goa govt gears up to host Christmas, New Year festivities

Panaji: With the State expecting to witness a rush for Christmas and New Year celebrations, Goa government has geared up to ensure incident-free festivities.

State chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday held a high level meeting with Director General of Police Jaspal Singh and other officers of his department chalking out the preparedness for the upcoming festive season.

Sawant said that all the wings of Goa Police department including Traffic Police have been activated to ensure that the celebrations are held hassle-free.

He said that the police will clamp down on drunken driving in the state, while illegal parking will also be dealt wit iron hand.

Sawant said that the patrolling in the sensitive areas has been increased while several persons with the doubtful records are taken into custody as a preventive measures.

The chief minister said that the Tourist Taxi operators have been asked to behave properly with the customers. He stated that the Police Department has been asked to take serious cognizance of any complaint by travelers against Tourist Taxi operators.

Goa government has also decided to seize the four wheelers and two wheelers which are given as Rent-a-Cab or Rent-a-Bike, he said adding that the Anti Narcotic Cell of Police Department has also been asked to increase surveillance adopting approach of no tolerance towards the consumption of narcotics.

Sawant said that the State government is also acting against the foreigners who are overstaying in the state. He said that the state authorities had identified 700 foreigners who were overstaying of which 650 were deported, while the process is going on to send back the rest.
