Goa govt defends its decision to give paid holiday on Karnataka election day
Panaji: Goa government on Tuesday defended its decision to give paid holiday on May 10 in the wake of elections in neighbouring Karnataka state, claiming that they were just following a practice.
State Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho told reporters in Panaji that Karnataka government had also given paid holiday last year when election was held for Goa Legislative Assembly seats.
“This is nothing new. Some of the opposition members are creating issue from nowhere,” Godinho said. The minister was talking to reporters after meeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Godinho said that the state government has followed the practice by giving paid holiday on May 10.
The opposition parties and an Industry body had reacted to the notification giving paid holiday on Karnataka election day. Goa State Industries Association had said that they may even consider taking legal recourse against such a holiday.
Referring to the stand of Goa State Industries Association, Godinho, who is also State Industries Minister, said that they (association) had over-reacted. “There was no need for the Industry association to over-react,” he said.
