Panaji: Four persons were arrested after the Goa Crime Branch raided a villa in North Goa’s Mapusa town and busted an alleged illegal online cricket betting racket operating during a live match of the Tri Nation A Series in Sri Lanka, police said on Monday.
Acting on specific information received on June 21 that illegal online betting was being conducted on the live cricket match between India-A and Sri Lanka-A, a Crime Branch team gathered intelligence and raided a villa at Ekta Nagar in Mapusa, Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Jivba Dalvi said.
During the raid, the police allegedly caught four persons red-handed while they were involved in online betting activities, he said.
The police seized two laptops, eight mobile phones, a router and other electronic articles collectively valued at around Rs 2 lakh from the spot.
The accused have been identified as Umashankar Joshi (42), a resident of Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Khot (25) from Sirsa in Haryana, Anvesh Soni (30) from Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh and Faijan Shaikh (22) from Itava in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.
Dalvi said an offence has been registered against the accused under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, 1976, and Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
All four accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway, he added.
