Former minister Achyut Usgaonkar passed away


Panaji: Former Goa Minister Achyut Kashinath Sinai Usgaonkar passed away on Tuesday, family sources said.

He was 92.

“Usgaonkar passed away at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim at 7.30a.m.,” his son-in-law Dinar Tarcar. He said that the former minister passed away due to age-related ailment.

He was a father of noted film actress Varsha Usgaonkar.  He is also survived by his two more daughters — Tosha Sangam Kurade and Manisha Dinar Tarcar.

The last rites on his body would be performed today at 4 pm. at St Inez Crematorium in Panaji, Tarcar said.

Usgaonkar was a leader of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. He served as a cabinet rank minister in Shashikala Kakodkar ministry of Goa, Daman and Diu from August 13, 1977 to April 27, 1979.

Before being a minister, Usgaonkar was deputy speaker of Goa in Dayanand Bandodkar ministry. Bandodkar was the first chief minister of the state.
