Panaji: The selfless service of fire personnel in their line saves hundreds of lives and this year was no different. Despite all odds during the pandemic, fire personnel were on their toes to attend to all calls they received with an additional role of sanitization of places in view of the pandemic. During the year 2020, the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services have collectively attended 2317 Fire calls and 3839 Emergency Calls, wherein 96 human lives and 585 Animal lives were saved.
In the line of duty, the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services in the year 2020 handled various Fire and Emergency cases which included serious chemicals gas leakages, liquefied gas leakages, electrical fires, flood rescue, animal rescue, chemical spillage, road accidents, dry grass fires and urban fires. Property worth Rs.24.45 crores was saved due to timely action of the Fire Personnel. When Cyclone Nisarga made landfall in northern Maharashtra on May 6 to May 5 left a trail of destruction in faraway Goa after gusty winds hits Goa at a speed of 80-100 kmph and heavy rain damaged trees and homes across the state. The Fire Fighter across the State worked tirelessly to ensure that the Citizens get the required help in such eventuality. During the Cyclonic storm the Department had attended 201 Nos. of Emergency calls wherein the property of Rs. 34.06 lacs and 13 animal lives were saved.
The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services with its 15 Fire Station in the State undertook the task of sanitizing by engaging the Fire Officers and Fire Personnel across the State of Goa. All public places prioritized by the respective Municipality or Village Panchayat and recommended by the Directorate of Municipal Administration or the Directorate of Village Panchayats viz bus Stands and bus Stops, Community Halls, Markets Places, Panchayats Offices, Temple Premises, Government Offices, Secretariat Complex, Ministerial Block, Assembly Complex, Fish Markets, Church Premises, Covid wards at Goa Medical College, Goa Dental College, Health Centers, Ferry Boats of River Navigation Department, Taxi Stands, Electricity Departments, Police Station/ Out Posts, check post areas, Sports Complex, Banks, Goa Dairy, Ravindra Bhavan etc. were Sanitized.
So far 3864 numbers of places have been sanitized by the Fire Personnel across the State of Goa. As on today 75 fire personnel had been infected with the Corona Virus and they have all been cured and have joined for duties.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, felicitated 97 Fire Personnel with Commendation Certificate for their meritorious & dedicated work on the occasion of Goa Statehood Day 30th May 2020. On the occasion of 60th Goa Liberation Day, December 19, 2020, 3 fire personnel namely Ashok Parab Sub-Officer, Deepak Shetgaonkar Leading Fire Fighter and Sitaram Kamat Watch Room Operator was awarded Goa chief Minister fire service medal for meritorious service
