Panaji: The outbreak of COVID-19 cases at a containment zone in Goa should not be treated as an exclusive instance as the people from this area is connected across to others in the port town of Vasco, a senior Congress functionary said on Wednesday.

Goa government on Monday declared Mangor Hill area of Vasco town in South Goa as a containment zone after a family of six members was tested positive for the infection.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had confirmed that 40 more people from the same locality had tested positive.

Congress’ Goa Spokesman Trajano D’Mello on Wednesday said the detection of COVID-19 at Mangor Hill should not be taken as an exclusive area.

“The CM is in denial that it is not a community transmission but only a local transmission. Such a statement from the CM when the link of the contact history is not yet established is confusing and therefore things cannot be taken lightly,” he said.

“Is the CM suggesting that the COVID-19 positive case germinated from Mangor Hill itself?” he questioned.

D’Mello claimed that reports suggest that one of the positive persons is in the fish fertilizer business and had come in contact with fish trucks bringing these consignments from Karnataka.

“This contact has not yet been established. In such situations the border staff that have been working for the last so many days on different shifts will have to be screened and immediately put under home quarantine till the tests with results are completed,” he said.

D’Mello said that most people from the Mangor Hill area are workers who go anywhere and everywhere to work.

“Therefore as a stringent precautionary measure it is suggested that the whole of Vasco be under a lockdown,” he demanded.
