Panaji: Congress party in Goa on Sunday protested at the site where Mahadayi river originates at Karnataka as an awareness to save it (river) from being diverted.

Congress’ Bicholim Taluka Chief Meghashyam Raut led workers protested at Degao village in Karnataka where the river originates.

Goa has been opposing proposed move of Karnataka to divert Mahadayi river. Raut was amongst the Congress leaders who had protested during Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar’s speech at International Film Festival of India (IFFI) inauguration on November 20, 2019.

Raut said that the Congress party in Goa has been vehemently opposing moves by BJP to allow the diversion of river by Karnataka.

“Time and again, we have seen how Javadekar has been issuing communications in favour of Karnataka. We have come at the origin of River to make people aware about the issue,” Raut said.

The Congress leader said that they were stopped by Karnataka police when they were returning after the protest, but was allowed to go after questioning.

“We have no faith that BJP would help us to save the river. BJP leaders in Goa are hand in gloves with its central leadership,” he said.

Javadekar had written to Karnataka in December stating that Environment Clearance was not required for a project on River Mahadayi.

The opposition parties comprising Congress, Goa Forward Party, MGP and Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte had moved Adjournment motion during one day assembly session on January 07, which was disallowed by the Speaker.
