Panaji : It is a well-known fact that drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can have devastating effects on the body. In particular, alcohol has a significant negative effect on nerves and muscle cells.

Alcohol is seen as a social drink. People debate on its consumption, is it good? is it bad? Drinkers argue that drinking brings them together & strengthens their bond while on the other hand it should not be forgotten that alcoholism has pernicious effects on the individual and his family.

People often wonder how much is too much ? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report on moderate drinking, Moderate drinking is explained as one standard drink per day for women and two for men, while heavy drinking is explained as more than three drinks per day for women and four for men.

For those who can’t seem to get their hands off alcohol there are rehabilitation facilities in Goa like Vista Rehabilitation centre Goa, Kripa foundation and Chaitanya institute for mental health to name a few. One such organisation is Alcoholics Anonymous which helps people to give up the habit.

All over the world, June 10 is celebrated by members of Alcoholics Anonymous as the Founders Day as this was the day that Dr Bob, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous had his last alcoholic drink and from then on the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous that is spread today over 180 countries in the world was born in Ohio, Akron, in the United States of America.

AA is a very old organisation. Its fellowship came to some parts of India in 1957 and then it was eventually established in Goa in 1975.  Alcoholics Anonymous, a non-profit organisation also has its office in Goa. There are now over 60 Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups spread in different parts of Goa where meetings are held every week for recovering alcoholics and those who have a desire to stop drinking.

This year their grand event will be held as a virtual event in Akron , Maica, a function that actually draws a crowd of over 10,000 recovered alcoholics and their families. The Goa fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous on this Day joins the rest of the World in celebrating solemnly in prayer and meditation with a determination and renewed resolution to be of service with love towards achieving its goal of reaching the suffering alcoholics who have not been shown the way of recovery.

Alcoholics Anonymous InterGroup Goa (South) has regretted its inability to make it possible for the members to meet together to celebrate this auspicious day due to Covid-19 pandemic but congratulates all the members of Goa fellowship and wishes them a lifetime sobriety and good health and prosperity to their families..
