Margao: Bajrang Dal activists on Friday evening protested outside the residence of veteran Konkani writer Uday Bhembre over his statements on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his links with Goa.

A group of activists peacefully protested outside the residence of the 87-year-old writer in Margao city of South Goa, questioning him over his video titled “Jagor,” in which he accused CM Dr Pramod Sawant of distorting historical facts.

Addressing the state-level function on Shiv Jayanti, Sawant had claimed that during Portuguese rule, a majority of Goans were saved from being converted to Christianity as Shivaji Maharaj ruled over a major part of Goa, where Portuguese rule was limited to three talukas.

The protests initially began at Cuncolim village in South Goa, where a group of Bajrang Dal activists burnt an effigy of Bhembre condemning his video.

After a brief protest, they proceeded to the residence of Bhembre in Margao city (South Goa) to question him over the video.

Bajrang Dal’s Goa convenor Viraj Desai, while protesting outside Bhembre’s residence, claimed that there is no evidence to support the statements made by the writer in his video.

He alleged that Bhembre was distorting history to please a particular community and insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Bhembre, who was present at the house, spoke to the protestors and attempted to justify his statements in the video. However, the protestors demanded that he apologise to the people.

The writer has refused to apologise, standing by the statements made in the video.
