Panaji: The state tourism department has decided to launch a massive crackdown on all illegal activities along the beachfront. A high-level tourism department official said that Minister Rohan Khaunte has directed officers to roll up their sleeves and carry out the drive across the beaches.
On Tuesday, the department cancelled the shack licence of Manuel Fernandes, who had sublet his structure at Arambol Beach. The issue came to light after staff members of the shack assaulted local youth Amar Bandekar, who later succumbed to his injuries.
“There are strict instructions for a crackdown on all illegal activities on the beachfront, including water sports. The minister will personally supervise the implementation of the crackdown,” the official said.
He added that the massive drive could begin at any time, as logistical arrangements are being finalized.
The official further stated that each shack will also be inspected for subletting, and all norms of the Tourism Shack Policy will be strictly enforced.
It is learned that the minister has issued clear instructions that no one will be spared, as recent incidents have raised concerns within the tourism sector.
