Six people have died and several others have been injured—some critically—after the stampede at the Sree Lairai Devi Temple festival in Shirgao.

Talking to reporters at the site, Sawant said that he has initiated an inquiry into the incident. “I have sought a detailed report on the incident. We will make the report public,” he said, while condoling the deaths of the pilgrims during the stampede.

He added that precautions will be taken in future during all temple festivals to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Sawant also said that he visited the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa town at 5 am after learning about the incident.

He stated that six lives were lost, as the victims were brought in dead to the hospital.
