Second highest spike in COVID-19 cases, 72 more persons infected

Panaji:  Goa on Wednesday reported 72 more COVID-19 positive cases, while one more person succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll to four.

As per Health Department’s bulletin issued here, a 66-year-old COVID-19 positive patient hailing from Taleigao village, expired on Tuesday evening at ESI hospital, a facility dedicated for the treatment of positive patients.

During the day, 72 people were tested positive while 74 were discharged from covidcare facilities after the treatment.

The health bulletin mentions that out of 2002 samples tested, 1433 are negative and 497 reports are awaited.

A senior health department official said that Ponda police station in North Goa had to be temporarily shut down after one its senior officer and two constables tested positive for the infection.

On Tuesday, two constables working in Police Headquarters Building in Panaji were also tested positive after which the department had taken up massive sanitisation drive.

The areas in and around Vasco town remains to be the biggest source of COVID-19 positive patients.

Mangor Hill area in Vasco, which has been declared as Containment Zone has reported 253 cases till date while another 194 cases were related to the infection which was carried from that area.

The areas like Sada, Baina, New Vaddem, Kharewada in Vasco also has sizeable number of positive patients detected.

State’s slum areas like Zuarinagar near Vasco are also becoming covid hotspots, as per the health department’s bulletin.

Total 48 people were tested positive at Zuarinagar, which is state’s biggest slum area, the bulletin reads.
