19 Rescued, Including Five Foreigners, from Drowning off Goa Beaches Last Weekend

Panaji, January 2025: Drishti Marine lifesavers rescued 19 people, including five foreigners, from drowning off Goa’s beaches last weekend as strong rip tides and currents swept through the waters. In addition to the rescues, lifesavers administered first aid to four beachgoers, including a jellyfish sting incident.

Arambol: Two Kazakhstani couples were swept 50 meters into the sea by a rip current despite warnings from lifesaver Akshan Talkar. Talkar, armed with a rescue tube, jumped in to save them, with fellow lifesaver Manoj Parab arriving with a rescue board. Together, they brought the tourists safely ashore.

Morjim: A Russian couple, aged 57 and 60, was rescued after being dragged 40 meters into the sea by a flash rip current. Lifesaver Shant Parab heard their cries and sent a rescue alert. With assistance from Mahadev, who arrived with a rescue tube, they secured the couple on a rescue board and brought them safely to shore.

Palolem: A 28-year-old from Ponda was rescued by a friend after nearly drowning in the Palolem river. Drishti Marine lifesavers Sarvesh Govekar, Pradeep Velip, Amol Painginkar, and Sameer Kankonkar provided critical aid, clearing his airway, administering oxygen, and stabilizing him before handing him to medical emergency services.

Calangute: At Calangute beach, multiple rescues saved tourists from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. A 14-year-old from Tamil Nadu, caught in a rip current, was rescued by lifesavers Rakesh Kumar and Sanjay Yadav. In a freak incident, five people, including two from Maharashtra and three from Andhra Pradesh, were saved after one person from the group began drowning, causing others to inadvertently rush to his aid, risking their own lives. Lifesavers Rakesh Kumar, Sanjay Yadav, Umesh Madaikar, and Hari Chopdekar rescued the entire group.

Candolim: Two Kashmiri men in their mid-thirties were rescued from a rip current at Candolim beach. Drishti Marine lifesavers Diwakar Desai and Suraj Sawant, assisted by Jayprakash and Yogendra Singh with rescue tubes, safely brought them back to shore.

Baga: A 13-year-old Russian girl, caught in a rip current, was rescued by lifesaver Sushant Gaonkar using a rescue board after spotting her struggling to swim.

Mandrem: Six tourists from Jaipur were caught in a rip current, with five managing to return ashore. A 27-year-old began drowning, but lifesaver Karan Tandel used a rescue board while Yuvraj Revankar deployed a jetski, securing the individual and bringing him back to shore.

Baina: A tourist’s finger was cut on a propeller while alighting from a sightseeing boat at Baina beach. The tourist received first aid at the nearby lifesaver tower.

Agonda: A 32-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy, both from Goa, were stung by a jellyfish off Agonda beach. Drishti Marine lifesaver administered first aid on the spot.
