Panaji: Utpal, elder son of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said that he would be campaigning for party candidate for upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Utpal is also being rumoured to be BJP’s candidate for upcoming Panaji by-election scheduled on May 19, but he has refused to comment on his intentions to contest in the assembly constituency, which was held by his father from 1994 till his death.

“Basically, the party has said that I should be campaigning for Lok Sabha elections in support of party candidate Shripad Naik,” he said.

“As of now, I will be going around Panaji assembly constituency to campaign for BJP candidate for Lok Sabha. Only this much has been told to me by my party,” he said.

BJP sources had claimed that party’s state general secretary Satish Dhond had met Utpal recently asking him to get on the field. Party has fielded Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik on North Goa Parliamentary seat.

He refused to comment on whether he would be interested in contesting Panaji by-election on party’s ticket.

On asked whether he could be taken as a replacement for his father, Utpal said “as I said, right now I am campaigning for Lok Sabha election. I am taking each day as it comes.”
