Sugarcane Farmers continue to protest, demand written assurance from Govt

Panaji: Sugarcane Farmers in Sanguem protest demanding Rs 3600 be paid per tonne of Sugarcane. The farmers inferred that they cannot wait for the sugarcane factory to revive its work demanding that some price for the produce of sugarcane must be paid by the government. Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaokar has also joined the protest, farmers demanded that they be given written assurance else they will not move from the protesting area in Sanguem. 
 
Agriculture Minister Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar was seen at the protest addressing the crowd and trying to control the agitated farmers. “The government has taken decisions for the welfare of the farmers, hence I believe if we have a dialogue and set up meeting with CM on Tuesday we can come up with an amicable solution, I request all farmers to quit their protest,” said Kavlekar. The farmers declared that they will be sitting for the protest till Tuesday.
Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaokar speaking about the plight of the farmers lamented, “The government is making empty promises that they would certainly revive Sanjeevani Sugar Factory, we have now demanded that the government give us a written assurance as the farmers are tired of the government tuning a blind eye towards their plight.”
