Panaji : As Goa’s biggest island Chorao is facing trash crises, volunteers from a local NGO, ‘The Village Recyclers’ launched ‘The
Chorao Waste Management Program’ at the Chorao island on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, October 2 at 9.15 am.
In the presence of the Deputy Collector for North Goa, Ajay Gaude, Panchayat members along with the volunteers of Village Recyclers cut a
red ribbon to inaugurate the programme after which the villagers will be educated on how to manage their household waste.
A new electric vehicle for zero-waste trash collection was displayed on this occasion. Chorao is undergoing a trash crisis and public health is at risk from the increasingly problematic dumping and burning of hazardous waste into our air, soil and
water, claims Sumita Ghosh, of The Village Recyclers.
She adds, “Our new electric vehicle, which will be used for the new trash collection programme, will make a ‘drive’ around the island, blasting music about waste management in honour of Gandhi’s
efforts to improve public health.”
