Valpoi: The Shel-Melavali villagers on Wednesday night witnessed cutting of two ‘khair’ trees by unknown people, who had taken the main parts of it while throwing the branches on the main road blocking it.

The residents had to clear the road for traffic in the morning. The theft has happened on Wednesday night.

The khair tree grows in the forested areas and has medicinal value. It is in demand from the Pharma companies due to which the theft might have occurred. The government usually grows this variety of tree in its nursery.

The illegal cutting of Khair trees and its supply is increasing day by day in this areas. The Forest officials are not performing their duties properly. They are not not doing late night patrolling and not deputing the forest guards in this area, say locals.
