Panaji: Several casual workers employed in beach cleaning contract marched to the office of Goa Tourism department after they were denied the services.

The workers were employed with Drishti Marines when it had won the contract of beach cleanliness. The aggrieved workers claimed that now they are thrown out of the work while they were replaced by non-Goans.

The affected workers were led by NCP’s State Vice President Rajendra Satelkar, Hope Foundation NGO’s Andrea Pereira and Domnick Pereira.

“These people were evicted from the work by engaging bouncers at Morjim beach. They had approached me for justice and that is why we decided to walk to Tourism Department’s office,” Satelkar told Tourism Director Menino D’Souza.

He said that 67 workers are left jobless.

Andrea Pereira of Hope Foundation said that there are several women involved in the beach cleaning business. “It is injustice on the part of Goans that non-Goans are given employment while ruling out locals,” she said.

D’Souza assured the affected workers that he would be calling the meeting with the private firm and the aggrieved workers to work out the solution.

Pereira said that the department should fix the time limit in which the issue would be settled.

D’Souza said that the meeting would be held on Monday to find out the solution.

Talking to this reporter from Delhi, Goa Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Dayanand Sopte said that the solution would be worked out on Monday.
