Shiroda:  Congress party has decided to put up united fight against BJP leader Subhash Shirodkar during upcoming Shiroda Assembly Constituency by-election, a senior functionary said.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar said that the party has begun approaching all the leaders who are politically against Shirodkar. The former Congress MLA had resigned in October last year to join BJP necessitating by-election in this constituency in South Goa.

Shirodkar is tipped off to be BJP’s candidate from Shiroda Assembly Constituency for the by-election, dates of which are yet to be announced.

Chodankar said that amongst the others who are opposed to Shirodkar, former BJP Minister Mahadev Naik has also decided to join the Congress party.

“Naik would be soon joining the Congress party to put up united front against Shirodkar,” he said.

When contacted, Naik confirmed that he would be joining Congress party soon. “I have taken the decision to join Congress after several leaders approached me to put up common front against Shirodkar,” he said.

Chodankar said that the party held meeting of the leaders at Margao on Thursday, which was chaired by All India Congress Committee Secretary A Chellakumar. Several Congress MLAs including former Chief Ministers Digambar Kamat, Ravi Naik and Francisco Sardinha were present for the meeting.

“People of Shiroda are upset as their MLA resigned midway without any valid reason for his gain. Congress party has always emerged victorious in Shiroda constituency and will continue the trend even during upcoming election,” he said.
