Panaji: Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday swept the first phase of municipal council elections by winning with majority in five out of six bodies that went for poll.

The party also won majority seats in the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) election which was held along with the six municipal councils on March 20.

While the elections were not fought on party lines, the BJP had fielded its panels in all the municipal bodies.

Panaji MLA and BJP leader Atanasio Monserratte led panel won on 25 out of 30 seats establishing the majority on the body, which governs the state capital city.

The ruling party also won the elections for Canacona, Curchorem, Bicholim, Valpoi and Pernem municipal councils. Congress-led panel won on Cuncolim municipal council.

Reacting to the verdict, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the people have once again, reimposed their faith in the rule of BJP.

“Though the elections were not fought on party line. The panels fielded by the party won with majority,” he said.

Sawant said that BJP will form its council in all these bodies.
