Margao: A team of young doctors presented their exemplary courage, professional commitment and personal sacrifice to conduct a high-risk c-section on a COVID 19 mother at Mother Care Hospital, Margao making it a first few in private hospitals.
The pregnant patient, who was from Panjim, was admitted on April 28 in the hospital in Margao due to shortage of beds in Panjim and other places. Since she was heavily pregnant and her due date was near, she couldn’t be given full COVID treatment and there was a significant risk to the patient and the baby owing to her health condition.
Without wasting much time, the team of young doctors lead by Dr Sawani Hegde Surlakar, Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician, performed a Cesarean section on the COVID positive patient, who also has moderately severe COVID 19 pneumonia and persistent fever.
“There has been a severe shortage of beds due to the significant rise in cases and referring to GMC in such a critical time could be a difficult option. At this point the team of young doctors decided to step up to save the mother and baby. After delivery, both the mother and the baby are doing fine. The patient is currently under observation of Internal Medicine and Pulmonologist of Mother Care Hospital for being COVID positive,” read a statement from the hospital.
Dr Sawani was assisted by Dr Neeraj Borkar, Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician, Dr Kefas Quadros, Consultant Anaesthetist and OT assistant Tirthanaka Naik. The delivery was done after Dr Prasad Hegde, Consultant Radiologist, performed bed side ultrasound for detection of estimated birth weight of the baby. The patient after her delivery is currently managed by Dr Aman Prabhugaonkar , Consultant Internal Medicine, and Dr Jagruti Nadkarni, Consultant Pulmonologist for COVID 19.
The Mother Care Hospital has been constantly supporting their team of doctors with infrastructure and most importantly moral support.
