Panaji, 22nd July 2025: Raising alarm over the Mhadei river dispute, Goa Forward Party President and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai today condemned the state government’s inaction as reports surfaced of water diversion activities in Bhandura, one of Goa’s most vital water sources.
Sardesai informed the House that on 19th July, a news channel had visited Bhandura and exposed the shocking diversion of water from the Khalsa stream, which feeds into the Bhandura. Their findings, backed by video evidence, reveal that forest lands have been marked under the guise of pipe manufacturing, allegedly to divert water towards Dharwad, Karnataka.
“This isn’t speculation anymore. The evidence is on video.” Sardesai said. “Three days have passed since this report aired on Prudent Media, yet the Chief Engineer has not filed a single report, and no action has been taken. What is the government waiting for?”
The MLA further questioned the role of local officials, who he claimed are fully aware but inactive. “If even one small permission was granted, this project would have been halted, but the silence from authorities tells another story. This is no longer just a plan; it is being executed rapidly.”
Calling Bhandura the main water source in the region, Sardesai warned of a looming water crisis for Goans. “Tampering with the natural spring at Bhandura will deprive thousands of their lifeline. How can the government stand by and do nothing?”
Sardesai criticised the House Committee for its inaction since its last meeting in January, expressing deep disappointment over the lack of follow-up. “I am left with no choice. If the House Committee continues to be this way, I no longer want to be a part of it. It has become a farce,” he declared.
This is a direct threat to Goa’s ecological and water security.” – He further stated.
