Red Alert issued for Goa, several areas faced flood-like situation

Panaji: Several parts of Goa remained severely affected with the flood like situation on Thursday as Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has issued Red Alert for the state for the entire day.

The IMD has predicted extremely Heavy rain at isolated places and very heavy rainfall at a few places with heavy rainfall at many places with strong surface winds gusting up to 50-6- kilometres per hour very likely over North Goa and South Goa districts on Thursday.
The rains continued lashing the state since Wednesday night, inundating several low lying areas in Pernem and Sattari talukas of North Goa in the state which faced flood-like situation.


Poriem MLA Deviya Rane raised the issue of flooding in Sattari taluka (in North Goa) on Thursday during ongoing assembly session.
She said that the life has come to standstill in Sattari while the students have missed their examination.

Rane demanded that Chief minister Dr Pramod Sawant and WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar should take immediate steps to protect lives and livelihood of the people.
Water Resources Department minister Subhash Shirodkar told the House that the engineers of the department are on the spot monitoring the situation. He said that the necessary action would be taken by the department, who has kept constant watch on the situation in the low lying areas.


The school students were most affected due to the flooding, even as there were no casualties reported. State Education Director Shailesh Zingade told PTI on Thursday that the teachers of the schools have been asked to take care of the students till they safely reach their homes.

He said that the parents need not panic, if their child has missed the examination as “life is more important than the examination.” Zingade said that the department will take necessary steps to compensate for the missing of the examination.

As per IMD data, Pernem taluka in North Goa received 143.4 mm rains during last 24 hours (as of 8.30 am on Thursday) while Valpoi received 133.4 mm rains during the same period.
