Panaji: With few days for two-day-long Assembly session, the opposition within opposition is proving to be an hindrance towards a collective face against Dr Pramod Sawant-led government.

While RGP Chief Manoj Parab, during his press conference, which he addressed after seven-month-long hiatus announced that his party will not be a part of united opposition, the simmering differences between GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai and AAP MLA Venzy Viegas also will prove detrimental for the opposition against the government.

RGP MLA Viresh Borkar, in the past, had expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of support by other opposition MLAs towards the issues raised by him. The POGO Bill seems to have fallen flat on the floor of the House.

Interestingly, Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira who was legal advisor for RGP on this Bill, himself did not support it when Borkar tried to get it passed on the floor of the House. None from the opposition stood with Borkar.

RGP’s decision to go solo for the Lok Sabha election by fielding its chief Parab in North Goa was the beginning of the end for the united opposition.

The recent statements by Sardesai against Viegas on Bandodkar issue and response by latter to the former, speaking about his association with the BJP in 2017 will also not augur well for the united opposition.

While the opposition benches are insisting for longer Assembly session, the rift within the non-ruling benches may surface prominently on the floor of the House.

With the state inching closer to Zilla Panchayat polls which are fought on the party line, the united opposition or INDIA Alliance seems to be just a dream in the state.

The ZP polls will herald campaign for the 2027 elections in the state. BJP has already submitted that they are 50 per cent prepared for the Assembly election while the opposition parties are yet to sit-across the table and initiate idea of fighting the polls together.

While AAP Goa President Amit Palekar has always supported the idea of INDIA Alliance, his Congress counterpart Amit Patkar is yet to open the doors for discussion. Patkar will have to speak to his Delhi bosses to commit for INDIA alliance.

The days to come are crucial for the opposition leaders as BJP has already announced 27 in 27.
