Margao: Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Futsal Ground at Maddicotto Cuncolim and urged youths to develop a true sportsmanship spirit.
Cuncolim chairperson Landry Mascarenhas, Councillor Mrs. Polita Carneiro, former chairperson Laxman Naik, and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said that football is in the blood of every Goan and hence this sport needs to be fostered.
“I feel very bad to see that the football standard is dropping in the state. We need to check the reasons behind it and take corrective measures so that our youths get opportunities at the state and national levels,” Alemao said.
“The sports department should take steps to encourage youths. I am confident that this project will encourage youths in the sports area and instill team spirit and discipline in the young minds. Youth should avail the facility and develop a true sportsmanship spirit,” he said.
“The craze of futsal is increasing in Goa. I moved a proposal for this ground after youths demanded it. This will be a national standard ground, where youths will get a platform to showcase their talent,” he said.
Alemao said that it will be the responsibility of every person to maintain this ground after it is commissioned. “I am hopeful that our youths will make good use of it,” he said, adding that work will be completed in the next five months.
“My father, former minister Joaquim Alemao, had provided several sports facilities here. We have many football players in Cuncolim who have brought laurels to our constituency,” he said.
Landry Mascarenhas expressed gratitude to MLA Yuri Alemao for taking up the project to develop sports skills in the youths. Polita Carneiro also spoke on the occasion.
