Bicholim: A man has been arrested in North Goa for burying alive his ailing wife in the mud at an under-construction site for the irrigation canal.
Bicholim Police on Thursday arrested 46-year-old Tukaram Shetgaonkar for burying alive his ailing 44-year-old wife Tanvi reportedly for not being able to bear the medical expenses of her treatment.
The corpse of the lady was recovered by labourers on Thursday at Narvem village in Bicholim taluka, 30 kilometres away from here, during the canal work on Tillari Irrigation project, police said.
Bicholim police have registered a case of murder and destruction of evidence under section 302 and 201 of Indian Penal Code respectively against the accused.
Police said that the accused had an argument with the labourers on Thursday when he attempted to stop them from carrying out work at the place where he had buried his wife alive.
“But despite this the labourers continued the work, only to stumble upon the corpse of a woman in the mud. The labourers immediately informed the police,” he said.
During the interrogation, the accused has confessed of the crime claiming that he had buried his ailing wife alive in the mud, a day earlier, on Wednesday.
Police said that the accused was doing odd jobs and was financially not sound.
