Panaji: A houseboat which was under renovation anchored at River Chapora near Siolim village, 40 kilometres away from here, caught fire this morning, a senior official said.
The ship which is equipped with restaurant on-board was undergoing renovation when the fire occurred inside it around 11 a.m. on Friday, Pernem Station Fire Officer Namdev Parwar said.
He said that the rope which was used for anchoring got burnt due to fire after which the ship drifted in the middle of the water.
“Alternate ship was arranged to reach to the Houseboat and firefighting was undertaken. All the workers who were engaged in renovation work were evacuated safely,” he said.
Parwar said that it took around two-and-half hours for the fire fighters to control and extinguish the fire, which had to be done using floating pump.
