Goa witnessed 21 per cent reduction in rape cases: Guv

Panaji: Claiming that law and order situation during last one year has been under control, Goa Governor Mridula Sinha said that there was reduction by 21 per cent into the cases of rape in the State during that period.

Governor was addressing Republic Day Parade at Campal Ground in Panaji. National BJP leader L K Advani was amongst the dignitaries present for the function.

“I am happy to inform you all that during last year, the law and order situation was under control due to which there was no major untoward incident happened in the State. Due to appropriate actions and preventive measures, the crime rate has gone down by 8.26 per cent during last one year,” she said.

“Heinous crimes were reduced by 15 per cent while the incidents of rape have decreased by 21 per cent during last one year,” Governor added.

In her half an hour long speech, she also said that State Police have introduced self defence as a part of curriculum to the school and college going girls due to which they are empowered.

Governor said that the State government has been encouraging Organic farming as a step to ensure that the income of farmers is doubled by the year 2022.

On the fisheries front, she said, the State government has banned fishing by bull trawling and using LED lights.

Governor emphasized that Goa government should work towards getting drop out rates from school to ‘zero’.

“Government is committed towards the continuous development of educational sector. There should be stress given on improving the quality of curriculum, availability of potable water, clean toilets and also to reduce drop out rates to zero (nil),” she said.

Governor said that the Information Technology Policy, which was introduced in July 2018 will provide 10,000 jobs to the youth.

Sinha said that the Investment Promotion Board has attracted industrial investment of Rs 1,070 crore through 166 projects creating employment opportunities for 22,586 people.
