Panaji: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Friday said that short-term courses in firefighting and disaster management would be introduced in the state, which will help the youth gain employment in the country and abroad, including on merchant navy vessels.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the newly constructed Administrative and Training Block for the state Fire and Emergency Services Department, Sawant said that personnel from foreign countries have also been getting trained at the Goa State Fire Force Training Centre.

The centre is part of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services, located in the heart of Panaji city.

The Chief Minister said the training centre, affiliated with Nagpur Disaster Management College, has been providing training in firefighting and disaster management. “Six personnel from foreign countries have taken a two-month-long training in disaster management here,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that the centre should start the short-term training courses, which will make the youth employable in the state and abroad, including onboard merchant navy ships.

He said that some of the colleges in the state have already introduced courses in disaster management, which is helping students choose their careers.
