Porvorim: The Goa government will file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against Karnataka for executing illegal activity upstream aiming to divert Mhadei river.

The MLAs opposition benches cornered Pramod Sawant-led government on the floor of the House during ongoing monsoon session on Tuesday over failure to stop Karnataka government from conducting illegal activities.

The issue was raised by Independent MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco who sought to know the progress of the case pending before the Supreme Court against the verdict of Inter state Water Dispute Tribunal on the share of Mhadei river water.

State chief minister Pramod Sawant told the House that the Karnataka has been actively involved in the activities aiming to divert Mhadei river.

“We cannot stop their activities as they are happening in their jurisdiction. But Goa government has taken every step to counter their attempts to divert Mhadei,” the chief minister said.

Sawant said that he had personally met Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate change Bhupender Yadav over the issue.

“I have discussed the matter and Union ministry will not give any permission to Karnataka to conduct any such activities,” he said.

Sawant also said that the state will file contempt petition against Karnataka before the Supreme Court on the matter.

State Water Resources department minister Subhash Shirodkar said that the state government has been monitoring the activities of the Karnataka.

The opposition benches including Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai, AAP MLA Venzy Viegas and others participated in the discussion.
