Panaji: In a major step, Goa government on Saturday announced that they will take over the admission rights in all the 21 private hospitals in the state, which are treating COVID-19 patients, from Monday onwards.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters in presence of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane that the private hospitals were not dedicating their 50 per cent bed capacity for treating COVID-19 patients.

“We have also came across the instances where private hospitals were not providing COVID-19 treatment under DDSSY scheme (state government’s medical insurance scheme),” he said adding that the hospitals were exorbitantly billing the patients.

Sawant said that only the rights of Admissions would be maintained with the state government while the management of these hospitals will remain with their owners.

He said that there are 21 hospitals which have been providing treatment to the COVID-19 patients.

Sawant said that the COVID-19 treatment in the private hospital would be covered under DDSSY scheme.

“We will ensure that 50 per cent of the bed capacity in the private hospitals is dedicated to treat COVID-19 patients. This will help to ease out the load on the facilities like Goa Medical College and Hospital,” the chief minister said.
