Panaji: It was an act that was unexpected. Goa Foundation symbolically locked the State Mines and Geology department accusing them of being “biggest source of illegalities.

Foundation’s  Director Claud Alvares accompanies by around 30-40 people today walked to the department’s office in Panaji city and locked the door. Alvares later handed over the keys to Panaji police station in charge Siddhanth Shirodkar.

“We ae symbolically locking the mines because this is the biggest source of illegalities. We are not interested in harming anybody. We want to pass on a political message to everybody that this department has let down interests of Goans,” Alvares told reporters after locking the department.

He claimed that the department has helped the mining firms to take away Iron ore illegally despite Supreme Court order on February 7, which has quashed 88 mining leases.

“The money earned from selling the ore by the mining firms has been stocked abroad while they are not paying the mining workers,” Alvares alleged.

“Till the issue of illegalities in the mining department are  sorted out, it (department)  will be closed permanently,” he said.
