PANAJI: Congress party laid scathing attack on BJP-led Goa government on the eve of state’s Liberation Day, accusing it of failing to preserve the  monuments of historical importance.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Patkar and Leader of Opposition in State Legislative Assembly Yuri Alemao released series of tweets alleging apathy on the part of the State government to preserve the monuments of Historical importance.

The Congress leaders highlighted the plight of Historic Lohia Maidan in Margao town and Martyrs Memorial at Assolna, both in South Goa District.

Patkar tweeted “This is Martyrs Memorial at Assolna-on the eve of Goa Liberation Day. This Village is birth place of Dr Juliao Menezes at whose invitation Dr Ram Manohar Lohia came to Goa and started Goa Revolution Movement. Apathy of @BJP4Goa Govt in preserving Historic Monuments is visible.”

Patkar posted a picture of the Memorial which is currently in a bad shape.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao tweeted “On the eve of Goa Liberation Day, the Commode on the Footpath of Historic Lohia Maidan at Margao reflects the Open Defecation Free Goa under @BJP4India and @BJP4Goa Governments. Most unfortunate that refurbishment of Lohia Maidan still remains incomplete.”

In a subsequent tweet, he wrote “Monuments, Documents and Symbols linked to Goa Liberation Movement needs to be protected and preserved for posterity. I once agains appeal to @goacm to Notify all Places of Historic Importance. Renovation and Refurbishment of all such places needs to be taken up on topmost priority.”

Lohia Maidan at Margao is a historic place from where Dr Ram Manohar Lohia gave a clarion call of Revolution against the Portuguese rule.
