Aastha’s Centre of Excellence for Persons with Disabilities inaugurated in Mapusa

The transformative initiative in Mapusa will feature eight specialized therapy and development centres to empower individuals with disabilities.

Mapusa, June 3: Aastha’s Centre of Excellence for Persons with Disabilities was inaugurated on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025 at Khorlim, Mapusa, Bardez – Goa. This landmark initiative aims to provide comprehensive, accessible, and inclusive services for individuals with disabilities across a range of therapeutic and developmental needs under the banner of Aastha’s Anand Niketan.

The centre was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Goa Dr. Pramod Sawant, with Minister for the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Subhash Phaldessai present as the Guest of Honour. Other distinguished dignitaries in attendance included Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Sadanand Shet Tanavade; Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly Joshua De Souza; State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Guruprasad Pawaskar; and Padma Shri awardee and Paralympics medallist Deepa Malik, whose collective presence reaffirmed the societal and governmental backing for initiatives that uplift the differently-abled.

President of Aastha’s Anand Niketan, Siddhesh Kotkar, welcomed the gathering and explained in detail the idea behind starting the Centre of Excellence for Persons with Disabilities.

At the heart of the new facility lies a suite of specialized therapeutic centres, each tailored to cater to various aspects of physical, cognitive, emotional, and vocational development. These include:

  • Saksham – the Physiotherapy Centre, designed to enhance mobility and physical function

  • Sargam – the Music & Dance Therapy Centre, using creative expression as a healing tool

  • Apar – the Early Intervention Centre, focusing on early developmental support for children

  • Swayam – the Occupational Therapy Centre, promoting independence in daily activities

  • Mhadei – the Hydro Therapy Centre, providing water-based physical therapy

  • Shruti – the Audiology & Speech Therapy Centre, addressing communication challenges

  • Ambar – a Multipurpose Seminar Hall, facilitating knowledge-sharing and events

  • Siddham – the Vocational Therapy Centre, aimed at skill development and employment readiness

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said:
The inauguration of Aastha’s Centre of Excellence marks a significant milestone in our journey towards an inclusive and equitable Goa. Our government remains deeply committed to empowering persons with disabilities and fostering a society where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and equal opportunity.

Aastha stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to the empowerment, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities. This Centre of Excellence will provide comprehensive support services, early intervention, special education, skill development, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, and guidance—all under one roof.

Minister for Social Welfare Subhash Phaldessai stated that Aastha’s Centre of Excellence is not just a facility—it is a powerful symbol of collective resolve to ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, can thrive.
By offering integrated services under one roof, Aastha paves the way for early intervention, skill-building, and holistic rehabilitation in Goa, thus leading the way.

The Centre of Excellence will serve as a hub of innovation and inclusion, enabling persons with disabilities to lead independent and meaningful lives. Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Sadanand Shet Tanavade emphasised that such a centre is a great example of public-private partnership that will cater to the most deserving population of our state.

These centres reflect Aastha’s unwavering commitment to the holistic growth and integration of persons with disabilities into mainstream society. The Centre of Excellence will not only provide hope and compassion, but also focus on progressive care, promoting empowerment through specialized services and community involvement.

Special invitee Padma Shri awardee and Paralympian Deepa Malik shared her journey and highlighted the powerful impact of such rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities.

The program was attended by children, parents, caregivers, NGOs, and other prominent experts working in the disability sector.

Aastha Secretary Dr. Chandrashekar Kelkar compared the program and proposed the vote of thanks.
