Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has raised serious concerns over tourist injuries caused by glass and plastic waste, emphasizing the need for greater discipline. Public drinking is now classified as a nuisance, with a new bottle deposit system in place to curb littering.
Violators will face strict penalties ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 2001 and the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001. Drinking in public and breaking glass bottles are strictly banned at designated tourist spots; The issue was highlighted by MLA Michael Lobo after a tourist was injured, prompting calls for a ban on glass bottles and plastic bags on beaches.
