Porvorim: Sports Minister Govind Gaude informed the House that Goa’s medal tally declined during the 38th National Games held in Uttarakhand because the state qualified to compete in only 19 disciplines.

Responding to a joint question tabled by Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira and Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai, Gaude stated that as per Indian Olympic Association guidelines, Goa was eligible to compete in only 19 disciplines during the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.

“Accordingly, teams were deputed by the Goa Olympic Association, and Goa secured 11 medals across four sports disciplines, with one being a demo sport,” the minister said.

Gaude further stated that during the 37th National Games, which were hosted by Goa, the state fielded 40 teams across various sports disciplines, as per Indian Olympic Association guidelines, and secured 92 medals in 19 sports disciplines.

“The medal ratio in the National Games held in Goa was higher compared to the National Games in Uttarakhand, as Goa participated in more sports disciplines—19 at Uttarakhand versus 42 in Goa,” Gaude said in a written reply.
