Panaji: Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai has challenged Congress to spell out its stand in Mhadei water dispute issue.

“Principal opposition party (Congress) is not willing put out its stand because it is going to be affected in Karnataka,” Sardesai told reporters today.

Sardesaisaid that the State government is committed towards protecting interest of the locals.

Sardesai was reacting to the volley of statements made by various leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president Amit Shah and Goa Congress Chief Girish Chodankar on Mahadayi issue.

“We have come to protect our interest and we will protect it. In the past it is this government which has worked for the interest of the state. The interest of goa will never be compromised by this government,” he added.

During a poll rally in Karnataka last week, Modi claimed that the then Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had said during Goa Assembly polls in 2007 that her party was “committed” to not allowing the southern state its share of water.

The PM said since the Congress was out of power in Goa, it was instigating the people of Karnataka on the Mahadayi issue and that instead of finding a solution to the dispute, it was referred to a tribunal.
