Panaji: Goa Forward Party Chief and State Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai on Saturday met Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu demanding his intervention to solve the long pending issue of the dependents on the mining industry.
Prabhu is currently in Goa, where Sardesai met him this afternoon.
“The issue needs to be placed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I requested his intervention to take up the issue before PM. He has responded positively,” Sardesai said.
He said that Prabhu who would be meeting CM Manohar Parrikar later in the day would also discuss the issue with him.
The mining industry in the State has come to a standstill since March this year after Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases. Goa Mining People’s Front, an umbrella organization of mining dependents, have been pressing for resumption of the activity.
GMPF has demanded that the Parliament should amend existing Mining Law so as to give additional lease of life to Iron Ore mining sites in the State.
