Panaji: In a major accident reported on Zuari Bridge on the National Highway last mid-night, an over-speeding SUV plunged into the River after ramming against the railings.
State Police along with Indian Coast Guard, Fire and Emergency Services and Coastal Police launched a massive operation to locate the vehicle but could not trace it due to darkness.
A senior police official said that the eye witnesses have revealed that at least four occupants were in the vehicle when it plunged in the River. The vehicle, identified as SUV, was driven by a lady driver, he added.
The accident happened at around 01.10 am when it tried to overtake another car on the bridge on the National Highway at Cortalim village, 15 kms away from Panaji.
The rescue operation was immediately launched with the help of barges (ships) and a vessel of Indian Coast Guard.
“Due to the darkness, nothing could be seen. The Indian Navy divers will be put in action tomorrow morning (Thursday morning) to trace the vehicle and the occupants,” police official said.
The bridge is located on the National Highway between Margao and Panaji cities in South Goa.
