Panaji, Sept 15, 2025: Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte convened a meeting with shack owners and representatives of shack associations to address matters related to the shack policy and reported cases of subletting.
While addressing the media after the meeting, Khaunte emphasized that shacks are an integral part of Goa’s traditional tourism economy and have significantly contributed to creating self-employment opportunities for Goans. He reiterated that the shack policy strictly prohibits subletting, and last year the Department received several complaints regarding violations.
Upon review, it was found that 23 shacks had been sublet to Goans, identified through payment tracking codes. These cases were initially placed under cancellation. However, following representations from shack associations and coastal MLAs, and after consultations with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, the government has decided to reconsider these cases, the Minister stated.
The licences for the 23 shacks will now be renewed upon resolution of the identified issues and completion of fee payment, with strict directions to ensure compliance with the non-subletting clause going forward.
