Panaji: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Friday questioned the BJP over its failure to pass a bill granting political reservation for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

AITC National Spokesman Trojano D’Mello told reporters that the Mamata Banerjee-led party has consistently raised the issue of political reservation for the ST community in Parliament.

“But BJP leaders refused to pass the bill during the recent Parliament session, claiming that there were more important bills that needed to be passed,” D’Mello alleged.

The spokesman said that there was no opposition to the bill and hence, it could have easily been passed on the floor of the House.

He said that TMC Member of Parliament Derek O’Brien had raised the issue during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, but the BJP refused to include it.

“This is a government that is out to crush people who are progressing in life,” he said, adding that the number of Scheduled Tribe community members in Goa is significant.

The TMC spokesman was referring to the demand for political reservation in four assembly constituencies for the ST community.

D’Mello alleged that this is a government meant only for the higher classes.
