Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that the proposed third district in the state will be named Kushavati, which will also be one of the aspirational districts in the country.
Sawant told reporters that the district will encompass the talukas of Dharbandora, Quepem, Sanguem, and Canacona, which are currently part of South Goa district.
At present, the state has two districts, North Goa and South Goa.
The Chief Minister said that all administrative work will continue to be handled from South Goa district until the infrastructure required for the new district is made available.
He said that the new district would be named Kushavati after the river that flows through these parts of Goa.
Sawant said that until a full-time Collector is appointed for the district, the responsibility will be handled by the South Goa Collector.
Quepem town will be the headquarters of the new district and will be connected through proper bus services from areas such as Canacona and Dharbandora to ensure that people do not face inconvenience.
He said that aspirational districts in the country receive additional funds of Rs 15 crore from the Central Government. Sawant added that special funds would also be requested from the Central Government to create infrastructure for the district, which has a 27 per cent tribal population.
