PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that the state has an impressive 86 per cent crime detection rate, while the government is also working on reducing the response time from the Police Control Room.

Sawant was responding to a series of allegations levelled by opposition benches led by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who claimed that the state is turning into the “murder capital of the country.”

Alemao stated that the year 2021 witnessed 26 murders, 2022 witnessed 44 cases, and 27 people were murdered in 2025. He also pointed out that the number of rape cases in the state is increasing, with 26 cases reported in 2021, 75 in 2022, 97 in 2023, 109 in 2024, and 102 in 2025. Alemao mentioned that he was reading the data provided by the government in response to a question during the ongoing Winter Session of the House.

The LoP reiterated that the state is emerging as a “murder capital of India.”

Responding to these claims, the Chief Minister said that Goa has a crime detection rate of 86 per cent, the highest in the country. He added that the Police Control Room van has an average response time of eight minutes, which will be further reduced to five minutes by providing necessary facilities to the police department.

Sawant noted that in many rape cases, the accused is known to the victim, often staying in her neighbourhood or related to her.

Pointing out the large-scale migration into the state, Sawant said that people from other states have made Goa their home. He also highlighted that the police have undertaken an extensive tenant verification drive across the state.

The Chief Minister further stated that CCTVs have been installed statewide and that prosecution procedures have been improved to ensure convictions in various cases.
