Vasco: A student from Bicholim, currently studying at BITS Pilani, Vasco, committed suicide in his hostel room, police said.
According to information, Verna police received a phone call from Arjun Halankar of BITS Pilani, Zuarinagar, informing them that a student, Atharva Desai, a resident of Bagwada, Assnora, Bicholim, was found hanging in his hostel room.
Upon reaching the spot, police found Atharva Desai lying on the floor in his room at BITS Pilani, Birla.
During the inquiry, it was revealed that the deceased had locked himself inside his room and did not respond to multiple attempts to contact him. Concerned about his absence, his friends Shaan and Ayush went to check on him. Subsequently, students Daksh, Ranjan Dey, and Kshitij managed to open the latch of the door through a ventilator located above the door using a cleaning mop and lowered the body.
A scene of unnatural death (U.D.) occurrence panchanama and inquest panchanama were conducted. The body was referred for post-mortem examination at SGDH, Margao, where the police surgeon certified the cause of death as “asphyxia as a result of constriction of the neck.” The deceased’s body was handed over to his family for final rites.
